Institutions and Unemployment: Do Interactions Matter?
نویسنده
چکیده
Isolated effects of labor and product market institutions as well as the interaction between both aforementioned categories on unemployment have been extensively discussed in the empirical literature. However, interaction effects between individual labor market institutions have been widely neglected, mainly due to the infeasibility to correctly specify the model. In this paper, a model averaging approach is adopted to show that considering institutional interactions can improve the explanatory power of macroeconomic models explaining unemployment. The approach permits to tackle model specification problems directly related to the inclusion of a large number of interactions. Using a panel data set for 17 OECD countries from 1982 to 2005, 22 robust and significant interactions can be identified. Furthermore, country-specific marginal effects of institutional changes are calculated and their economic significance is analyzed for selected countries. JEL classification: C33, E02, E24

Unemployment, Labour Market Institutions and Shocks∗
This paper aims to explain the cross sectional differences in, and the time series evolution of, OECD unemployment from 1960 to 1995. We want to know how much of it can be accounted for by changes in labour market institutions, and the interactions of institutions and macroeconomic shocks. Our aim is also to verify the consistency of unemployment fluctuations with the labour cost results presen...

In his famous 1982 address as a president of the American Sociological Association, Erving Goffman returns to the relation between the interaction order and social structures, which he defines as a „loose coupling‟. This paper elaborates on this intriguing but partially disappointing response, and proposes to complement it by analyzing the role of institutions. First, individual interactions, s...
متن کاملAssessing the Political Viability of Labor Market Reform. The Case of Employment Protection
T here is somewhat of a consensus among economists that labor market rigidities are responsible for high unemployment in Europe, and in particular for its most alarming aspects such as its long duration and high incidence on youth. Unemployment benefits lower the incentive for job search and increase wage pressure by insiders. Minimum wages price the least skilled out of the market. Firing cost...

It is argued that research on UI is largely a success story, involvin...
